Rise and Shout the Cougars are out!

BYU Football finished up the regular season over the weekend with a thrilling win over rival Utah. It was one of the most dramatic endings ever in college football with BYU scoring a touchdown on the last play of the game to win. They finish the season with a 10-2 record and now play Oregon in the Las Vegas Bowl.

It was a lot of fun (but stressful) watching the final drive with my 2 boys sitting on my lap chanting "Go BYU!"

Hopefully all you EDN subscribers out there are getting your 9.2 updates for EDN.  And if you are are not a EDN member, now is a great time to join and get the new 9.2 ArcGIS Server products.

    Al comes to Redlands

A few weeks ago, before my trip to Barcelona, I had the chance to hear Al Gore speak at the University of Redlands.  He was impressive, as he has clearly done his homework and really knows the facts on global warming.  I appreciated that he didn't make it a political issue...

The event was part of the centennial celebration of the University and co-sponsored by ESRI.  Here's the summary of the evening from the Redlands Daily Facts.

    A slice of pie

The following is from Josh Peck from the campaign.

Next Thursday, chances are you'll be sitting down to a large Thanksgiving meal. Turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and if you’re like millions of Americans, maybe you'll finish it all off with a slice of pie.

Today, thousands of Americans are participating in a different kind of meal. One of the biggest challenges to building the will to end extreme poverty is communicating the reality of a problem that is so far away. Over the course of the last 35 years Oxfam America, a founding partner of ONE, has worked to develop a yearly tradition the Thursday before Thanksgiving called the "Oxfam Hunger Banquet" to help everyday Americans relate to the problems people face in the world's poorest countries.

Learn more about Oxfam Hunger Banquets and how to share this simple idea with your family

The idea is pretty simple. If 20 people sit down at your table, representing the world's population, three would get a gourmet meal, five would get rice and beans, and 12 would receive a small portion of rice. The true power of a Hunger Banquet is that as you eat your meal, unlike the real world, you see what's on everyone else's plate.

Harry Truman said, "Give Americans the facts and they'll do the right thing." In the real world 850 million people go to sleep hungry every night, but the problem isn't a lack of food. We have more than enough to go around. The problem is the distribution, something we, with other countries around the world, can be the first generation to fix. As you give thanks next week, share the idea of an Oxfam Hunger Banquet with your family and friends.

Each and every American that becomes part of the fight strengthens the political will to help the world's poorest people. The Oxfam Hunger Banquet is meant to illustrate the scope of the problem and remind us of the special role we play in fixing it. This Thanksgiving we are lucky not just to have food on our table, but to live in a time and place when we have the power to end extreme poverty.

    Thank you,

    Josh Peck,

    FC Barcelona

I have always wanted to attend a big soccer match in Europe.  I've seen the big stadiums and the great fans on TV but wanted to experience it for myself.  So I jumped at the chance to go to a FC Barcelona game in the Spanish League while in Barcelona this week.

The experience was great! Camp Nou, the stadium is huge (3rd largest soccer stadium in the world) and the crowd was into every pass, tackle and shot on goal.  FC Barca won 3-1 with two goals from it's Brazilian star Ronaldinho (2 time player of the year).

On my photo site, there are few photos from the match.

    Other Topics

It's been interesting to re-connect with former roommates and friends via this blog...  I've realized that some of my readers are not GIS Professionals so I've decide to include a few more post on non GIS subjects.  Hopefully that want offend or turn off all you GIS geeks but there is much more to me then my job with ESRI.

Many of you know that over the last 18 months, I've re-dedicated my self to living and eating healthier.  Since May 2005, I've lost around 70 lbs and feel great. I think a lot more about what I eat so with Halloween this week, I'm sure you've got some candy around the house so here's a good article from Men's Health about Halloween candy.
